Americans are known for their distinct national pride that emanates from their historical experiences as a country and steps they have taken towards achieving a free and prosperous state. We all agree that anyone could take pride in the political, economic and social advantages that Americans enjoy. However, this extreme sense of national pride comes with its own share of advantages; here are some:

  • It can lead to sycophancy: You can envision a scenario where people go to a great extent to defend their national pride; such people are not able to tolerate any critical or negative comments about their nationalism.
  • It can lead to ineffective governments: Americans who are so obsessed with their national pride will tolerate even the most radical ideas meant to protect their nationalism. As such, they may end up electing governments that are not centered on policies.
  • People get blinded on the real situation of their country: The real state of a country can only be analyzed objectively. Sadly, such critics do not have a place in countries containing patriotic citizens.

Despite all the shortcomings, we cannot dispute the power of the American nationalistic pride in propelling citizens to fight for better living standards, respect for human rights and democratic governments.
